CaringBridge: Communicating about Events, Progress, and Concerns

Caring for someone who is ill can be overwhelming. And trying to keep relatives and friends up to date on all the medical news is even harder. CaringBridge is an online global nonprofit social network that helps alleviate some of that stress. It allows you to build a personal website or mobile app with all the tools you need to keep family and friends updated about a patient’s status. A caregiver or patient can report on treatments or the progress of an illness whether care is given at home or in the hospital. Friends and family who sign up to be informed can respond, encourage, and write letters or tributes to the patient or family. This eliminates the endless calls or e-mails people used to have to make to “catch up” on a patient’s progress. Friends and family can even print daily correspondence and information so people who are less computer savvy can also stay informed. You can set boundaries, ask for and organize help with running errands, preparing food, or doing home and garden chores. Patients and caregivers can respond to questions and offers of help as their time allows, not whenever a phone rings or an e-mail pings them. Everyone is on the same page with a fraction of the effort.
